  A Comparison of Different Translations  

Not all translation of the Qur-an is the same. Not all translations match the Arabic Qur-an in rhythm of text, depth of meaning, syntax of sentences, word usage and adherence to the divine words. While some translations are truly loyal to actual Arabic words, some are liberal in bringing out the meaning of the verses. Some translations are truly academic in nature, while others are informative in their objective. Some translators disliked strict loyalty to each and every Arabic words, for fear of obscuring the inherent meaning; while others were vehemently loyal to the revelation, yet succeeded in conveying the meaning. Some translators enjoyed slight liberty with choice of words, while others guarded themselves from what could very well be interpolation of thoughts. Below are sample of 6 translations of Surah Baqarah, arranged verse by verse. The purpose is here is to provide an interesting platform to compare the translations rather than to identify a correct or incorrect translation. Translators names are arranged in alphabetic order by their last name. The translators are Abdullah Yusuf Ali, Zohurul Hoque, T. J. Irving, T.U. Hilali & M. Khan, M. Pickthall, and M.S. Shakir.

Verse 2:8
Yusuf Ali:
Of the people there are some who say: "We believe in God and the Last Day;" but they do not (really) believe.
Zohurul Hoque:
And of mankind there are some who say: "We believe in Allah and in the Future Day", but they are not at all Believers.
T. J. Irving:
Some people say: "We believe in God and the Last Day," while they are not believers.
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
And of mankind, there are some (hypocrites) who say: "We believe in Allâh and the Last Day" while in fact they believe not.
M. Pickthall:
And of mankind are some who say: We believe in Allah and the Last Day, when they believe not.
M.H. Shakir:
And there are some people who say: We believe in Allah and the last day; and they are not at all believers.

Verse 2:9
Yusuf Ali:
Fain would they deceive Allah and those who believe, but they only deceive themselves, and realise (it) not!
Zohurul Hoque:
Feign would they deceive Allah and those who believe. But they do not deceive any except themselves, and they do not perceive.
T. J. Irving:
They would like to deceive God and those who believe, while they merely outwit themselves and do not even notice it!
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
They (think to) deceive Allâh and those who believe, while they only deceive themselves, and perceive (it) not!
M. Pickthall:
They think to beguile Allah and those who believe, and they beguile none save themselves; but they perceive not.
M.H. Shakir:
They desire to deceive Allah and those who believe, and they deceive only themselves and they do not perceive.

Verse 2:10
Yusuf Ali:
In their hearts is a disease; and Allah has increased their disease: And grievous is the penalty they (incur), because they are false (to themselves).
Zohurul Hoque:
In their hearts is a disease, so Allah increased to them the disease, and for them is a painful punishment because they have been belying.
T. J. Irving:
Their hearts contain malice so God has increased their [share of] malice. They will have painful torment because they have been lying.
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
In their hearts is a disease (of doubt and hypocrisy) and Allâh has increased their disease. A painful torment is theirs because they used to tell lies.
M. Pickthall:
In their hearts is a disease, and Allah increaseth their disease. A painful doom is theirs because they lie.
M.H. Shakir:
There is a disease in their hearts, so Allah added to their disease and they shall have a painful chastisement because they lied.

Verse 2:11
Yusuf Ali:
When it is said to them: "Make not mischief on the earth," they say: "Why, we only Want to make peace!"
Zohurul Hoque:
And when it is said to them: "Do not make mischief in the earth", they say: "Surely we are indeed peacemakers".
T. J. Irving:
Whenever someone tells them: "Don't act so depraved on earth," they say: "We are only improving matters!"
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
And when it is said to them: "Make not mischief on the earth," they say: "We are only peacemakers."
M. Pickthall:
And when it is said unto them: Make not mischief in the earth, they say: We are peacemakers only.
M.H. Shakir:
And when it is said to them, Do not make mischief in the land, they say: We are but peace-makers.

Verse 2:12
Yusuf Ali:
Of a surety, they are the ones who make mischief, but they realise (it) not.
Zohurul Hoque:
Is it not that they themselves are the mischief-makers? But they do not perceive.
T. J. Irving:
They are indeed mischief makers, but they are not aware of it.
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
Verily! They are the ones who make mischief, but they perceive not..
M. Pickthall:
Are not they indeed the mischief-makers ? But they perceive not.e not.
M.H. Shakir:
Now surely they themselves are the mischief makers, but they do not perceive.

Verse 2:13
Yusuf Ali:
When it is said to them: "Believe as the others believe:" They say: "Shall we believe as the fools believe?" Nay, of a surety they are the fools, but they do not know
Zohurul Hoque:
And when it is said to them: 'Believe as the people believe', they say: "Shall we believe as the fools have believed?" Is it not that surely they are themselves the fools? But they do not know.
T. J. Irving:
When someone tells them: "Believe just as other people believe," they say: "Are we to believe just as simpletons believe?" Surely they are the fools even though they do not realize it!
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
And when it is said to them (hypocrites): "Believe as the people (followers of Muhammad Peace be upon him , Al-Ansâr and Al-Muhajirûn) have believed," they say: "Shall we believe as the fools have believed?" Verily, they are the fools, but they know not.
M. Pickthall:
And when it is said unto them: believe as the people believe, they say: shall we believe as the foolish believe ? are not they indeed the foolish ? But they know not.
M.H. Shakir:
And when it is said to them: Believe as the people believe they say: Shall we believe as the fools believe? Now surely they themselves are the fools, but they do not know.

Verse 2:14
Yusuf Ali:
When they meet those who believe, they say: "We believe;" but when they are alone with their evil ones, they say: "We are really with you: We (were) only jesting."
Zohurul Hoque:
And when they meet those who believe, they say: "We believe". But when they are alone with their Evil-ones, they say: "We are really with you, we by ourselves were only mocking."
T. J. Irving:
Whenever they meet those who believe, they say: "We believe;' while once they go off alone with their ringleaders, they say: "We are with you; we were only joking!"
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
And when they meet those who believe, they say: "We believe," but when they are alone with their Shayâtin (devils - polytheists, hypocrites, etc.), they say: "Truly, we are with you; verily, we were but mocking."
M. Pickthall:
And when they fall in with those who believe, they say: We believe; but when they go apart to their devils they declare: Lo! we are with you; verily we did but mock.
M.H. Shakir:
And when they meet those who believe, they say: We believe; and when they are alone with their Shaitans, they say: Surely we are with you, we were only mocking.

Verse 2:15
Yusuf Ali:
God will throw back their mockery on them, and give them rope in their trespasses; so they will wander like blind ones (To and fro).
Zohurul Hoque:
Allah throws back the mockery to them, and leaves them along in their trespasses blindly wandering on.
T. J. Irving:
God will joke with them and let them go on acting arrogantly in their blind fashion!
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
Allâh mocks at them and gives them increase in their wrong-doings to wander blindly.
M. Pickthall:
Allah (Himself) doth mock them, leaving them to wander blindly on in their contumacy..
M.H. Shakir:
Allah shall pay them back their mockery, and He leaves them alone in their inordinacy, blindly wandering on

Verse 2:16
Yusuf Ali:
These are they who have bartered Guidance for error: But their traffic is profitless, and they have lost true direction,
Zohurul Hoque:
These are those who buy Error for Guidance, so their trade does not bring profit, and they are not guided.
T. J. Irving:
Those are the ones who have purchased error at the price of guidance, while their bargain does n them nor have they been guided. The Arrogant
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
These are they who have purchased error for guidance, so their commerce was profitless. And they were not guided.
M. Pickthall:
These are they who purchase error at the price of guidance, so their commerce doth not prosper, neither are they guided.
M.H. Shakir:
These are they who buy error for the right direction, so their bargain shall bring no gain, nor are they the followers of the right direction.

Verse 2:17
Yusuf Ali:
Their similitude is that of a man who kindled a fire; when it lighted all around him, God took away their light and left them in utter darkness. So they could not see.
Zohurul Hoque:
Their similitude is like the parable of one who kindles a fire, but when it has lit up all around him, Allah takes away their light, and leaves them in utter darkness,- they cannot see..
T. J. Irving:
They may be compared to someone who kindles a fire, and once it lights up whatever lies around him, God takes away their light and leaves them in darkness. They do not see:
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
Their likeness is as the likeness of one who kindled a fire; then, when it lighted all around him, Allâh took away their light and left them in darkness. (So) they could not see.
M. Pickthall:
Their likeness is as the likeness of one who kindleth fire, and when it sheddeth its light around him Allah taketh away their light and leaveth them in darkness, where they cannot see,
M.H. Shakir:
Their parable is like the parable of one who kindled a fire but when it had illumined all around him, Allah took away their light, and left them in utter darkness-- they do not see.

Verse 2:18
Yusuf Ali:
Deaf, dumb, and blind, they will not return (to the path).
Zohurul Hoque:
Deafness, dumbness, blindness,- so that they cannot return.
T. J. Irving:
deaf, dumb and blind will never respond!
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
They are deaf, dumb, and blind, so they return not (to the Right Path).
M. Pickthall:
Deaf, dumb and blind; and they return not.
M.H. Shakir:
Deaf, dumb (and) blind, so they will not turn back.

Verse 2:19
Yusuf Ali:
Or (another similitude) is that of a rain-laden cloud from the sky: In it are zones of darkness, and thunder and lightning: They press their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunder-clap, the while they are in terror of death. But God is ever round the rejecters of Faith!
Zohurul Hoque:
Or like a rainstorm from the heaven, in it are darkness, and thunder, and lightning; they press their fingers in their ears against the thunderclaps for fear of death; but Allah is ever encompassing for the Unbelievers!
T. J. Irving:
Or to a raincloud from the sky containing darkness, Thunder and lightning; they stick their fingers in their ears to ward off death of the thunderclaps, for God will soon be rounding up disbelievers
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
Or like a rainstorm from the sky, wherein is darkness, thunder, and lightning. They thrust their fingers in their ears to keep out the stunning thunderclap for fear of death. But Allâh ever encompasses the disbelievers (i.e. Allâh will gather them all together).
M. Pickthall:
Or like a rainstorm from the sky, wherein is darkness, thunder and the flash of lightning. They thrust their fingers in their ears by reason of the thunder-claps, for fear of death, Allah encompasseth the disbelievers (in His guidance, His omniscience and His omnipotence).
M.H. Shakir:
Or like abundant rain from the cloud in which is utter darkness and thunder and lightning; they put their fingers into their ears because of the thunder peal, for fear of death, and Allah encompasses the unbelievers.

Verse 2:20
Yusuf Ali:
The lightning all but snatches away their sight; every time the light (Helps) them, they walk therein, and when the darkness grows on them, they stand still. And if God willed, He could take away their faculty of hearing and seeing; for God hath power over all things. !
Zohurul Hoque:
The lightning almost snatches away their sight. Every time it flashes for them they walk in it; but when the darkness grows upon them they stand still. And if Allah had willed, He could surely have taken away their hearing and their sight. Allah is indeed Possessor of power over all things.
T. J. Irving:
Lightning almost snatches their sight away: each time it lights things up for them, they walk along in it, while when darkness settles down on them, they stand stockstill. If God wanted, He would take away their hearing and eyesight; God is capable of everything!
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
The lightning almost snatches away their sight, whenever it flashes for them, they walk therein, and when darkness covers them, they stand still. And if Allâh willed, He could have taken away their hearing and their sight. Certainly, Allâh has power over all things.
M. Pickthall:
The lightning almost snatcheth away their sight from them. As often as it flasheth forth for them they walk therein, and when it darkeneth against them they stand still. If Allah willed, He could destroy their hearing and their sight. Lo! Allah is able to do all things..
M.H. Shakir:
The lightning almost takes away their sight; whenever it shines on them they walk in it, and when it becomes dark to them they stand still; and if Allah had pleased He would certainly have taken away their hearing and their sight; surely Allah has power over all things. .
