  A Comparison of Different Translations  

Not all translation of the Qur-an is the same. Not all translations match the Arabic Qur-an in rhythm of text, depth of meaning, syntax of sentences, word usage and adherence to the divine words. While some translations are truly loyal to actual Arabic words, some are liberal in bringing out the meaning of the verses. Some translations are truly academic in nature, while others are informative in their objective. Some translators disliked strict loyalty to each and every Arabic words, for fear of obscuring the inherent meaning; while others were vehemently loyal to the revelation, yet succeeded in conveying the meaning. Some translators enjoyed slight liberty with choice of words, while others guarded themselves from what could very well be interpolation of thoughts. Below are sample of 6 translations of Surah Baqarah, arranged verse by verse. The purpose is here is to provide an interesting platform to compare the translations rather than to identify a correct or incorrect translation. Translators names are arranged in alphabetic order by their last name. The translators are Abdullah Yusuf Ali, Zohurul Hoque, T. J. Irving, T.U. Hilali & M. Khan, M. Pickthall, and M.S. Shakir.

Verse 2:168
Yusuf Ali:
O ye people! Eat of what is on earth, Lawful and good; and do not follow the footsteps of the evil one, for he is to you an avowed enemy.
Zohurul Hoque:
O you mankind! eat of what is on the earth, lawful, pure; and do not follow the footsteps of the Evil-one. Surely he is to you an open enemy.
T. J. Irving:
Mankind, eat anything lawful, wholesome that exists on earth do not follow in Satan's footsteps; he is an open enemy of yours.
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
O mankind! Eat of that which is lawful and good on the earth, and follow not the footsteps of Shaitân (Satan). Verily, he is to you an open enemy.
M. Pickthall:
O mankind! Eat of that which is lawful and wholesome in the earth, and follow not the footsteps of the devil. Lo! he is an open enemy for you.
M.H. Shakir:
O men! eat the lawful and good things out of what is in the earth, and do not follow the footsteps of the Shaitan; surely he is your open enemy.

Verse 2:169
Yusuf Ali:
For he commands you what is evil and shameful, and that ye should say of God that of which ye have no knowledge.
Zohurul Hoque:
Verily he bids you to evil and indecency, and that you speak against Allah what you do not know.
T. J. Irving:
He merely orders you to commit evil and shocking deeds, and to say what you do not know about God.
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
[Shaitân (Satan)] commands you only what is evil and Fahshâ (sinful), and that you should say against Allâh what you know not.
M. Pickthall:
He enjoineth upon you only the evil and the foul, and that ye should tell concerning Allah that which ye know not.
M.H. Shakir:
He only enjoins you evil and indecency, and that you may speak against Allah what you do not know.

Verse 2:170
Yusuf Ali:
When it is said to them: "Follow what God hath revealed:" They say: "Nay! we shall follow the ways of our fathers." What! even though their fathers Were void of wisdom and guidance?
Zohurul Hoque:
And when it is said to them: "Follow what Allah has revealed", they say: "We shall rather follow that upon which we found our forefathers." What! even though their fore-fathers did not apply any wisdom, nor did they follow guidance?
T. J. Irving:
Whenever someone tells them: "Follow what God has sent down;" they say: "Rather we will follow what we discovered our forefathers were doing," even though their forefathers did not use reason in any way nor were they guided.
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
When it is said to them: "Follow what Allâh has sent down." They say: "Nay! We shall follow what we found our fathers following." (Would they do that!) Even though their fathers did not understand anything nor were they guided?
M. Pickthall:
And when it is said unto them: Follow that which Allah hath revealed, they say: We follow that wherein we found our fathers. What! Even though their fathers were wholly unintelligent and had no guidance ?
M.H. Shakir:
And when it is said to them, Follow what Allah has revealed, they say: Nay! we follow what we found our fathers upon. What! and though their fathers had no sense at all, nor did they follow the right way.

Verse 2:171
Yusuf Ali:
The parable of those who reject Faith is as if one were to shout Like a goat- herd, to things that listen to nothing but calls and cries: Deaf, dumb, and blind, they are void of wisdom.
Zohurul Hoque:
And the parable of those who disbelieved is like the parable of one who shouts to that which does not hear anything except a call and a cry. Deafness, dumbness blindness- so that they do not exercise wisdom.
T. J. Irving:
Those who disbelieve may be compared to those who bleat away at something that only listens to calls and cries: deaf, dumb and blind, they do not use their reason.
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
And the example of those who disbelieve, is as that of him who shouts to the (flock of sheep) that hears nothing but calls and cries. (They are) deaf, dumb and blind. So they do not understand.
M. Pickthall:
The likeness of those who disbelieve (in relation to the messenger) is as the likeness of one who calleth unto that which heareth naught except a shout and cry. Deaf, dumb, blind, therefore they have no sense.
M.H. Shakir:
And the parable of those who disbelieve is as the parable of one who calls out to that which hears no more than a call and a cry; deaf, dumb (and) blind, so they do not understand.

Verse 2:172
Yusuf Ali:
O ye who believe! Eat of the good things that We have provided for you, and be grateful to God, if it is Him ye worship.
Zohurul Hoque:
O you who believe! eat of the good things that We have provided you with; and give thanks to Allah, if it is Him alone Whom you use to worship.
T. J. Irving:
You who believe, eat any wholesome things We have provided you with and thank God if it is He whom you worship.
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
O you who believe (in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism)! Eat of the lawful things that We have provided you with, and be grateful to Allâh, if it is indeed He Whom you worship.
M. Pickthall:
O ye who believe! Eat of the good things wherewith We have provided you, and render thanks to Allah if it is (indeed) He Whom ye worship.
M.H. Shakir:
O you who believe! eat of the good things that We have provided you with, and give thanks to Allah if Him it is that you serve.

Verse 2:173
Yusuf Ali:
He hath only forbidden you dead meat, and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that on which any other name hath been invoked besides that of God. But if one is forced by necessity, without wilful disobedience, nor transgressing due limits,- then is he guiltless. For God is Oft-forgiving Most Merciful.
Zohurul Hoque:
He has forbidden you only what dies of itself, and the blood, and the flesh of swine, and that over which any other than Allah has been invoked. But whoever is constrained, without being disobedient nor exceeding the limit, no sin be upon him then. Allah is certainly most Forgiving, most Rewarding.
T. J. Irving:
He has only forbidden you what has died by itself, blood and pork, and anything that has been consecrated to something besides God. Yet anyone who may be forced to do so, without craving or going too far, will have no offence held against him; for God is Forgiving, Merciful.
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
He has forbidden you only the Maytatah (dead animals), and blood, and the flesh of swine, and that which is slaughtered as a scrifice for others than Allâh (or has been slaughtered for idols, etc., on which Allâh's Name has not been mentioned while slaughtering). But if one is forced by necessity without wilful disobedience nor transgressing due limits, then there is no sin on him. Truly, Allâh is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
M. Pickthall:
He hath forbidden you only carrion, and blood, and swineflesh, and that which hath been immolated to (the name of) any other than Allah. But he who is driven by necessity, neither craving nor transgressing, it is no sin for him. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.
M.H. Shakir:
He has only forbidden you what dies of itself, and blood, and flesh of swine, and that over which any other (name) than (that of) Allah has been invoked; but whoever is driven to necessity, not desiring, nor exceeding the limit, no sin shall be upon him; surely Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Verse 2:174
Yusuf Ali:
Those who conceal God's revelations in the Book, and purchase for them a miserable profit,- they swallow into themselves naught but Fire; God will not address them on the Day of Resurrection. Nor purify them: Grievous will be their penalty.
Zohurul Hoque:
Surely those who conceal what Allah has revealed out of the Scripture, and exchange it for a paltry price, these- they eat into their bellies nothing but Fire; and Allah will not speak to them on the day of the Awakening, nor will He purify them, and for them is a painful punishment.
T. J. Irving:
Those who hide what God has sent down in the Book and (then) barter it off for a paltry price only suck fire into their bellies. God will not speak to them on Resurrection Day nor will He purify them; they will have painful torment!
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
Verily, those who conceal what Allâh has sent down of the Book, and purchase a small gain therewith (of worldly things), they eat into their bellies nothing but fire. Allâh will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor purify them, and theirs will be a painful torment.
M. Pickthall:
Lo! those who hide aught of the Scripture which Allah hath revealed and purchase a small gain therewith, they eat into their bellies nothing else than fire. Allah will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He make them grow. Theirs will be a painful doom.
M.H. Shakir:
Surely those who conceal any part of the Book that Allah has revealed and take for it a small price, they eat nothing but fire into their bellies, and Allah will not speak to them on the day of resurrection, nor will He purify them, and they shall have a painful chastisement.

Verse 2:175
Yusuf Ali:
They are the ones who buy Error in place of Guidance and Torment in place of Forgiveness. Ah! what boldness (They show) for the Fire!
Zohurul Hoque:
These are those who have bought Error by Guidance, and punishment in place of forgiveness. Then how bold they are to the Fire!
T. J. Irving:
Those are the ones who have purchased error instead of guidance, and torment instead of forgiveness. Why do they insist on facing the Fire?
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
Those are they who have purchased error at the price of Guidance, and torment at the price of Forgiveness. So how bold they are (for evil deeds which will push them) to the Fire.
M. Pickthall:
Those are they who purchase error at the price of guidance, and torment at the price of pardon. How constant are they in their strife to reach the Fire!
M.H. Shakir:
These are they who buy error for the right direction and chastisement for forgiveness; how bold they are to encounter fire.

Verse 2:176
Yusuf Ali:
(Their doom is) because God sent down the Book in truth but those who seek causes of dispute in the Book are in a schism Far (from the purpose).
Zohurul Hoque:
That! because Allah has revealed the Scripture with the Truth. And surely those who disagree in the Scripture are indeed in a far-off obstinacy.
T. J. Irving:
That is because God has sent the Book down with the Truth, while those who disagree about the Book go much too far in dissension.
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
That is because Allâh has sent down the Book (the Qur'ân) in truth. And verily, those who disputed as regards the Book are far away in opposition.
M. Pickthall:
That is because Allah hath revealed the Scripture with the truth. Lo! those who find (a cause of) disagreement in the Scripture are in open schism.
M.H. Shakir:
This is because Allah has revealed the Book with the truth; and surely those who go against the Book are in a great opposition.
