Comparison of Different Translations |
Not
all translation of the Qur-an is the same. Not all translations match the
Arabic Qur-an in rhythm of text, depth of meaning, syntax of sentences,
word usage and adherence to the divine words. While some translations are
truly loyal to actual Arabic words, some are liberal in bringing out the
meaning of the verses. Some translations are truly academic in nature, while
others are informative in their objective. Some translators disliked strict
loyalty to each and every Arabic words, for fear of obscuring the inherent
meaning; while others were vehemently loyal to the revelation, yet succeeded
in conveying the meaning. Some translators enjoyed slight liberty with choice
of words, while others guarded themselves from what could very well be interpolation
of thoughts. Below are sample of 6 translations of Surah Baqarah, arranged
verse by verse. The purpose is here is to provide an interesting platform
to compare the translations rather than to identify a correct or incorrect
translation. Translators names are arranged in alphabetic order by their
last name. The translators are Abdullah Yusuf Ali, Zohurul Hoque, T.
J. Irving, T.U. Hilali & M. Khan, M. Pickthall, and M.S. Shakir.

Yusuf Ali:
And believe in what
I reveal, confirming the revelation which is with you, and be not
the first to reject Faith therein, nor sell My Signs for a small price;
and fear Me, and Me alone. |
Zohurul Hoque:
And believe in that
which I have revealed confirming which is with you, and do not become
the first to disbelieve in it, and do not exchange My Messages for
a meager price; and Me, Me alone then should you revere. |
T. J. Irving:
Believe in what I
have sent down to confirm what you already have, and do not be the
first to disbelieve in it. Do not sell My signs for paltry price.
I am the One you should heed! |
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
And believe in what
I have sent down (this Qur'ān), confirming that which is with you,
[the Taurāt (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)], and be not the first
to disbelieve therein, and buy [get ( )] not with My Verses [the Taurāt
(Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] a small price (i.e. getting a small
gain by selling My Verses), and fear Me and Me Alone. (Tafsir At-Tabarī,
Vol. I, Page 253). |
M. Pickthall:
And believe in that
which I reveal, confirming that which ye possess already (of the Scripture),
and be not first to disbelieve therein, and part not with My revelations
for a trifling price, and keep your duty unto Me. |
M.H. Shakir:
And believe in what
I have revealed, verifying that which is with you, and be not the
first to deny it, neither take a mean price in exchange for My communications;
and Me, Me alone should you fear. |

Yusuf Ali:
And cover not Truth
with falsehood, nor conceal the Truth when ye know (what it is). |
Zohurul Hoque:
And do not clothe
the Truth with falsehood, nor conceal the Truth, while you were knowing.. |
T. J. Irving:
Do not cloak Truth
with falsehood nor hide the Truth while you realize it. |
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
And mix not truth
with falsehood, nor conceal the truth [i.e. Muhammad Peace be upon
him is Allāh's Messenger and his qualities are written in your Scriptures,
the Taurāt (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] while you know (the truth).
M. Pickthall:
Confound not truth
with falsehood, nor knowingly conceal the truth. |
M.H. Shakir:
And do not mix up
the truth with the falsehood, nor hide the truth while you know (it). |
Yusuf Ali:
And be steadfast
in prayer; practise regular charity; and bow down your heads with
those who bow down (in worship). |
Zohurul Hoque:
And establish the
Salat, and give the Zakat, and bow down with the bowers down. |
T. J. Irving:
Keep up prayer, pay
the welfare tax, and worship along with those who bow their heads |
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
And perform As-Salāt
(Iqāmat-as-Salāt), and give Zakāt, and Irka' (i.e. bow down or submit
yourselves with obedience to Allāh) along with ArRaki'ūn |
M. Pickthall:
Establish worship,
pay the poor-due, and bow your heads with those who bow (in worship). |
M.H. Shakir:
And keep up prayer
and pay the poor-rate and bow down with those who bow down. 44. |
Yusuf Ali:
Do ye enjoin right
conduct on the people, and forget (To practise it) yourselves, and
yet ye study the Scripture? Will ye not understand? |
Zohurul Hoque:
Do you command mankind
for piety while you yourselves forget, and yet you read the scripture?
Don't you then apply sense? |
T. J. Irving:
Are you ordering
people to be virtuous while forgetting it yourselves, even as you
recite the Book? Will you not use you reason? |
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
Enjoin you Al-Birr
(piety and righteousness and each and every act of obedience to Allāh)
on the people and you forget (to practise it) yourselves, while you
recite the Scripture [the Taurāt (Torah)]! Have you then no sense? |
M. Pickthall:
Enjoin ye righteousness
upon mankind while ye yourselves forget (to practise it) ? And ye
are readers of the Scripture! Have ye then no sense ? |
M.H. Shakir:
What! do you enjoin
men to be good and neglect your own souls while you read the Book;
have you then no sense? |
Yusuf Ali:
Nay, seek (God's)
help with patient perseverance and prayer: It is indeed hard, except
to those who bring a lowly spirit, |
Zohurul Hoque:
And you seek the
help with perseverance and Salat. And that indeed is a hard thing
except for the humble ones,- |
T. J. Irving:
Seek help through
patience and prayer, since it is exacting except for the submissive
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
And seek help in
patience and As-Salāt (the prayer) and truly it is extremely heavy
and hard except for Al-Khāshi'ūn [i.e. the true believers in Allāh
- those who obey Allāh with full submission, fear much from His Punishment,
and believe in His Promise (Paradise, etc.) and in His Warnings (Hell,
etc.)]. |
M. Pickthall:
Seek help in patience
and prayer; and truly it is hard save for the humble- minded, |
M.H. Shakir:
And seek assistance
through patience and prayer, and most surely it is a hard thing except
for the humble ones,. |

Who bear in mind
the certainty that they are to meet their Lord, and that they are

who think that they
are indeed going to meet their Rabb, and that they are certainly returning
towards Him. |
T. J. Irving:
who assume they
will meet their Lord, and that they will return to Him. |
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
(They are those)
who are certain that they are going to meet their Lord, and that unto
Him they are going to return. |

will have to meet their Lord, and that unto Him they are returning. |

Who know that they
shall meet their Lord and that they shall return to Him |
