A
Comparison of Different Translations |
|
Not
all translations of the Qur-an are the same. Not all translations match
the Arabic Qur-an in rhythm of text, depth of meaning, syntax of sentences,
word usage and adherence to the divine words. While some translations are
truly loyal to actual Arabic words, some are liberal in bringing out the
meaning of the verses. Some translations are truly academic in nature, while
others are informative in their objective. Some translators disliked strict
loyalty to each and every Arabic words, for fear of obscuring the inherent
meaning; while others were vehemently loyal to the revelation, yet succeeded
in conveying the meaning. Some translators enjoyed slight liberty with choice
of words, while others guarded themselves from what could very well be interpolation
of thoughts. Below are sample of 6 translations of Surah Baqarah, arranged
verse by verse. The purpose is here is to provide an interesting platform
to compare the translations rather than to identify a correct or incorrect
translation. Translators names are arranged in alphabetic order by their
last name. The translators are Abdullah Yusuf Ali, Zohurul Hoque, T.
J. Irving, T.U. Hilali & M. Khan, M. Pickthall, and M.S. Shakir.

Yusuf Ali:
|
Those who believe
(in the Qur'an), and those who follow the Jewish (scriptures), and
the Christians and the Sabians,- any who believe in God and the Last
Day, and work righteousness, shall have their reward with their Lord;
on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve. |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
Surely as to those
who believe, and those who Judaize, and the Christians, and the Sabians-
whoever believes in Allah and the Future Day, and does good,- for
such, then, their reward is in the presence of their Rabb; and there
is no fear on them, nor will they grieve. |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
Those who believe
and those who are Jews, Christians and Sabeans, [in fact] anyone who
believes in God and the Last Day, and acts honorably will receive
their earnings from their Lord: no fear will lie upon them nor need
they feel saddened. |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
Verily! Those who
believe and those who are Jews and Christians, and Sabians, whoever
believes in Allāh and the Last Day and do righteous good deeds shall
have their reward with their Lord, on them shall be no fear, nor shall
they grieve. |
|
M. Pickthall:
|
Lo! Those who believe
(in that which is revealed unto thee, Muhammad), and those who are
Jews, and Christians, and Sabaeans - whoever believeth in Allah and
the Last Day and doeth right - surely their reward is with their Lord,
and there shall no fear come upon them neither shall they grieve.
|

M.H. Shakir:
|
Surely those who
believe, and those who are Jews, and the f Christians, and the Sabians,
whoever believes in Allah and the Last day and does good, they shall
have their reward from their Lord, and there is no fear for them,
nor shall they grieve. |
|
|
|
Yusuf Ali:
|
And remember We
took your covenant and We raised above you (The towering height) of
Mount (Sinai) : (Saying): "Hold firmly to what We have given you and
bring (ever) to remembrance what is therein: Perchance ye may fear
God." |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
And remember,- We
took your Covenant and raised above you the Mount : "Take hold what
We have given you, with a resolution, and remember what is in it,
perhaps you may practice reverence." |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
Thus we have made
an agreement with you and raised the Mountain over you: "Hold firmly
to what We have brought you and remember what it contains, so that
you may do your duty;" |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
And (O Children
of Israel, remember) when We took your covenant and We raised above
you the Mount (saying): "Hold fast to that which We have given you,
and remember that which is therein so that you may become Al-Muttaqūn
(the pious - see V.2:2). |
|
M. Pickthall:
|
And (remember, O
Children of Israel) when We made a covenant with you and caused the
mount to tower above you, (saying): Hold fast that which We have given
you, and remember that which is therein, that ye may ward off (evil).
|
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
And when We took
a promise from you and lifted the mountain over you: Take hold of
the law (Tavrat) We have given you with firmness and bear in mind
what is in it, so that you may guard (against evil). |
|
|
|
Yusuf Ali:
|
But ye turned back
thereafter: Had it not been for the Grace and Mercy of God to you,
ye had surely been among the lost. |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
Then, you turned
back after that; and had it not been for the grace of Allah upon you
and His mercy, you would surely have been among the losers. |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
while later on you
turned away, and if God's bounty and His mercy had not [rested] upon
you, you would have turned out to be losers! |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
Then after that
you turned away. Had it not been for the Grace and Mercy of Allāh
upon you, indeed you would have been among the losers. |
|
M. Pickthall:
|
Then, even after
that, ye turned away, and if it had not been for the grace of Allah
and His mercy ye had been among the losers. |
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
Then you turned back
after that; so were it not for the grace of Allah and His mercy on
you, you would certainly have been among the losers. |
|
|
|
Yusuf Ali:
|
And well ye knew
those amongst you who transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath: We
said to them: "Be ye apes, despised and rejected." |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
Moreover, surely
you already know those of you who transgressed regarding the Sabbath;
so We said to them: "You become apes, driven away." |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
Yet you knew which
of you had been defiant on the Sabbath, so We told them: "Become apes,
rejected!" |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
And indeed you knew
those amongst you who transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath (i.e.
Saturday). We said to them: "Be you monkeys, despised and rejected."
|
|
M. Pickthall:
|
And ye know of those
of you who broke the Sabbath, how We said unto them: Be ye apes, despised
and hated! |
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
And certainly you
have known those among you who exceeded the limits of the Sabbath,
so We said to them: Be (as) apes, despised and hated. |
|
|
|
Yusuf Ali:
|
So We made it an
example to their own time and to their posterity, and a lesson to
those who fear God. |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
Thus We made it
an example for those around it, and those after it, and an admonition
for the reverent. |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
We set them up as
an illustration of what had come before them and what would come after
them, and as a lesson for the heedful. |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
So We made this
punishment an example to their own and to succeeding generations and
a lesson to those who are Al-Muttaqūn (the pious - see V.2:2) |
|
M. Pickthall:
|
And We made it an
example to their own and to succeeding generations, and an admonition
to the God-fearing. |
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
So We made them an
example to those who witnessed it and those who came after it, and
an admonition to those who guard (against evil). |
|
|
|
Yusuf Ali:
|
And remember Moses
said to his people: "God commands that ye sacrifice a heifer." They
said: "Makest thou a laughing-stock of us?" He said: "God save me
from being an ignorant (fool)!" |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
And behold! Musa
said to his people, "Allah indeed commands you that you should slaughter
a heifer." They said: "Do you take us for a jest?" He said: "I take
refuge with Allah from being of the ignorant." |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
When Moses told his
folk: "God commands you to sacrifice a cow," they said: "Do you take
us for a laughingstock?" He said: "I seek refuge with God lest I become
so ignorant!" |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
And (remember) when
Mūsa (Moses) said to his people: "Verily, Allāh commands you that
you slaughter a cow." They said, "Do you make fun of us?" He said,
"I take Allāh's Refuge from being among Al-Jāhilūn (the ignorants
or the foolish)." |
|
M. Pickthall:
|
And when Moses said
unto his people: Lo! Allah commandeth you that ye sacrifice a cow,
they said: Dost thou make game of us ? He answered: Allah forbid that
I should be among the foolish! |
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
And when Musa said
to his people: Surely Allah commands you that you should sacrifice
a cow; they said: Do you ridicule us? He said: I seek the protection
of Allah from being one of the ignorant |
|
|
|
Yusuf Ali:
|
They said: "Beseech
on our behalf Thy Lord to make plain to us what (heifer) it is!" He
said; "He says: The heifer should be neither too old nor too young,
but of middling age. Now do what ye are commanded!" |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
They said: "Call
on your Rabb, for our sake, to make clear to us what she is." He replied:
"Verily He says, she indeed is a heifer neither too aged nor too young,
of a middle age between these. Now, do what you are commanded." |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
They said: "Appeal
to your Lord for us, to explain to us what she is." He said: "He says
she is neither a worn-out cow, nor a heifer, but of an age in between.
Do as you are ordered!" |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
They said, "Call
upon your Lord for us that He may make plain to us what it is!" He
said, "He says, 'Verily, it is a cow neither too old nor too young,
but (it is) between the two conditions', so do what you are commanded."
|
|
M. Pickthall:
|
They said: Pray for
us unto thy Lord that He make clear to us what (cow) she is. (Moses)
answered: Lo! He saith, Verily she is a cow neither with calf nor
immature; (she is) between the two conditions; so do that which ye
are commanded. |
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
They said: Call on
your Lord for our sake to make it plain to us what she is. Musa said:
He says, Surely she is a cow neither advanced in age nor too young,
of middle age between that (and this); do therefore what you are commanded.
|

|
Yusuf Ali:
|
They said: "Beseech
on our behalf Thy Lord to make plain to us Her colour." He said: "He
says: A fawn-coloured heifer, pure and rich in tone, the admiration
of beholders!" |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
They said: "Call
on your Rabb, for our sake, to make clear to us what her color is."
He said: "Surely He says, she is indeed a yellow heifer- intensely
deep in her color- delighting to the beholders." |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
They said: "Appeal
to your Lord for us, to explain to us what color she is." He said:
"He says that she is a bright yellow cow. Her color gladdens those
who look at her." |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
They said, "Call
upon your Lord for us to make plain to us its colour." He said, "He
says, 'It is a yellow cow, bright in its colour, pleasing to the beholders.'
" |
|
M. Pickthall:
|
They said: Pray for
us unto thy Lord that He make clear to us of what colour she is. (Moses)
answered: Lo! He saith: Verily she is a yellow cow. Bright is her
colour, gladdening beholders. |
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
They said: Call on
your Lord for our sake to make it plain to us what her color is. Musa
said: He says, Surely she is a yellow cow; her color is intensely
yellow, giving delight to the beholders. |
|
|
|
Yusuf Ali:
|
They said: "Beseech
on our behalf Thy Lord to make plain to us what she is: To us are
all heifers alike: We wish indeed for guidance, if God wills." |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
They said: "Call
on your Rabb, for our sake, to make clear to us what she be, for the
heifers appear alike to us; and indeed, if it pleases Allah, we shall
surely be guided." |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
They said: "Appeal
to your Lord for us, to explain to us what she is like. Cows seem
all alike to us and we should be guided properly, if God so wishes."
|
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
They said, "Call
upon your Lord for us to make plain to us what it is. Verily to us
all cows are alike, And surely, if Allāh wills, we will be guided."
|
|
M. Pickthall:
|
They said: Pray for
us unto thy Lord that He make clear to us what (cow) she is. Lo! cows
are much alike to us; and Lo! if Allah wills, we may be led aright. |
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
They said: Call on
your Lord for our sake to make it plain to us what she is, for surely
to us the cows are all alike, and if Allah please we shall surely
be guided aright. |
|
|
|
Yusuf Ali:
|
He said: "He says:
A heifer not trained to till the soil or water the fields; sound and
without blemish." They said: "Now hast thou brought the truth." Then
they offered her in sacrifice, but not with good-will. kkk |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
He said: "Certainly
He says, she is surely a heifer not yoked to plough the land, nor
used to irrigate the field,- sound, without a blemish in her." They
said: "Now you have brought the Truth." Then they slaughtered her,
and it did not appear that they would do. |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
He said: "He says
that she is a cow which has not yet been broken in to plow the earth
nor to irrigate any crops; she is sound and has no blemish on her."
They said: "Now you are telling the Truth!", and they slaughtered
her though they almost had not done so. |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
He [Mūsa (Moses)]
said, "He says, 'It is a cow neither trained to till the soil nor
water the fields, sound, having no other colour except bright yellow.'
" They said, "Now you have brought the truth." So they slaughtered
it though they were near to not doing it. |
|
M. Pickthall:
|
(Moses) answered:
Lo! He saith: Verily she is a cow unyoked; she plougheth not the soil
nor watereth the tilth; whole and without mark. They said: Now thou
bringest the truth. So they sacrificed her, though almost they did
not. |
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
Musa said: He says,
Surely she is a cow not made submissive that she should plough the
land, nor does she irrigate the tilth; sound, without a blemish in
her. They said: Now you have brought the truth; so they sacrificed
her, though they had not the mind to do (it). |
