A
Comparison of Different Translations |
|
Not
all translations of the Qur-an are the same. Not all translations match
the Arabic Qur-an in rhythm of text, depth of meaning, syntax of sentences,
word usage and adherence to the divine words. While some translations are
truly loyal to actual Arabic words, some are liberal in bringing out the
meaning of the verses. Some translations are truly academic in nature, while
others are informative in their objective. Some translators disliked strict
loyalty to each and every Arabic words, for fear of obscuring the inherent
meaning; while others were vehemently loyal to the revelation, yet succeeded
in conveying the meaning. Some translators enjoyed slight liberty with choice
of words, while others guarded themselves from what could very well be interpolation
of thoughts. Below are sample of 6 translations of Surah Baqarah, arranged
verse by verse. The purpose is here is to provide an interesting platform
to compare the translations rather than to identify a correct or incorrect
translation. Translators names are arranged in alphabetic order by their
last name. The translators are Abdullah Yusuf Ali, Zohurul Hoque, T.
J. Irving, T.U. Hilali & M. Khan, M. Pickthall, and M.S. Shakir.

Yusuf Ali:
|
Remember ye slew
a man and fell into a dispute among yourselves as to the crime: But
God was to bring forth what ye did hide. |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
And remember,- you
killed a person, then you disagreed about it. And Allah was to bring
forth what you were concealing. |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
When You killed
a soul and quarreled over it, God was bound to bring forth whatever
you had hidden. |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
And (remember) when
you killed a man and fell into dispute among yourselves as to the
crime. But Allâh brought forth that which you were hiding. |
|
M. Pickthall:
|
And (remember) when
ye slew a man and disagreed concerning it and Allah brought forth
that which ye were hiding. |
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
And when you killed
a man, then you disagreed with respect to that, and Allah was to bring
forth that which you were going to hide. |
|
|
|
Yusuf Ali:
|
So
We said: "Strike the (body) with a piece of the (heifer)." Thus God
bringeth the dead to life and showeth you His Signs: Perchance ye
may understand. |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
So We said: "Liken
him to a part of it." Likewise Allah brings the dead to life, and
He shows you His Signs, that perhaps you may understand. |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
We said: "Strike
him with some part of it." Thus God revives the dead and shows you
His signs so you ma use your reason. |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
So We said: "Strike
him (the dead man) with a piece of it (the cow)." Thus Allâh brings
the dead to life and shows you His Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses,
lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) so that you may understand. |
|
M. Pickthall:
|
And We said: Smite
him with some of it. Thus Allah bringeth the dead to life and showeth
you His portents so that ye may understand. |
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
So We said: Strike
the (dead body) with part of the (Sacrificed cow), thus Allah brings
the dead to life, and He shows you His signs so that you may understand.
|

|
Yusuf Ali:
|
Thenceforth were
your hearts hardened: They became like a rock and even worse in hardness.
For among rocks there are some from which rivers gush forth; others
there are which when split asunder send forth water; and others which
sink for fear of God. And God is not unmindful of what ye do. |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
Then even after
that your hearts hardened, so that they became like rocks,- rather
worse in hardness. And surely there are rocks out of which gush forth
streams, and truly there are others which when split up, water then
comes out therefrom; and indeed there are others which fall down for
fear of Allah. And Allah is not unaware as to what you do. |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
Even after that
your hearts were hardened and became stony, and even harder yet, for
there are some stones which rivers gush out of and there are others
which water comes forth from when they split open and there are still
others which collapse out of awe for God. God is no oblivious of what
you are doing! |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
Then, after that,
your hearts were hardened and became as stones or even worse in hardness.
And indeed, there are stones out of which rivers gush forth, and indeed,
there are of them (stones) which split asunder so that water flows
from them, and indeed, there are of them (stones) which fall down
for fear of Allâh. And Allâh is not unaware of what you do. |
|
M. Pickthall:
|
Then, even after
that, your hearts were hardened and became as rocks, or worse than
rocks, for hardness. For indeed there are rocks from out which rivers
gush, and indeed there are rocks which split asunder so that water
floweth from them. And indeed there are rocks which fall down for
the fear of Allah. Allah is not unaware of what ye do. |

M.H. Shakir:
|
Then your hearts
hardened after that, so that they were like rocks, rather worse in
hardness; and surely there are some rocks from which streams burst
forth, and surely there are some of them which split asunder so water
issues out of them, and surely there are some of them which fall down
for fear of Allah, and Allah is not at all heedless of what you do.

Yusuf Ali:
|
Can ye (o ye men
of Faith) entertain the hope that they will believe in you?- Seeing
that a party of them heard the Word of God, and perverted it knowingly
after they understood it. |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
Can you then expect
that they would believe in you, while decidedly a party of them used
to hear the word of Allah, then they altered it after they had understood
it, while they were knowing? |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
Are you so keen for
them to believe for your own sake while group of them have already
heard God's word? Then they tamper with it once they have studied
it, and they realize it. |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
Do you (faithful
believers) covet that they will believe in your religion inspite of
the fact that a party of them (Jewish rabbis) used to hear the Word
of Allâh [the Taurât (Torah)], then they used to change it knowingly
after they understood it? |
|
M. Pickthall:
|
Have ye any hope
that they will be true to you when a party of them used to listen
to the word of Allah, then used to change it, after they had understood
it, knowingly ? |
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
Do you then hope
that they would believe in you, and a party from among them indeed
used to hear the Word of Allah, then altered it after they had understood
it, and they know (this). |
|
|
|
Yusuf Ali:
|
Behold! when they
meet the men of Faith, they say: "We believe": But when they meet
each other in private, they say: "Shall you tell them what God hath
revealed to you, that they may engage you in argument about it before
your Lord?"- Do ye not understand (their aim)? |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
And when they meet
those who believe, they say: "We believe." But when some of them are
alone to others they say: "Do you talk to them as to what Allah has
disclosed to you, that they may argue with you thereby in the presence
of your Rabb? Do you not then understand?" |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
Whenever they meet
with those who believe, they say: "We believe!", while when some of
them go off privately with one another, they say: "Will you report
something to the which God has disclosed to you, so they may dispute
with you about it in the presence of your Lord? Don't you use your
reason?" |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
And when they (Jews)
meet those who believe (Muslims), they say, "We believe", but when
they meet one another in private, they say, "Shall you (Jews) tell
them (Muslims) what Allâh has revealed to you [Jews, about the description
and the qualities of Prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him , that which
are written in the Taurât (Torah)], that they (Muslims) may argue
with you (Jews) about it before your Lord?" Have you (Jews) then no
understanding? |

M. Pickthall:
|
And when they fall
in with those who believe, they say: We believe. But when they go
apart one with another they say: Prate ye to them of that which Allah
hath disclosed to you that they may contend with you before your Lord
concerning it ? Have ye then no sense ? |
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
And when they meet
those who believe they say: We believe, and when they are alone one
with another they say: Do you talk to them of what Allah has disclosed
to you that they may contend with you by this before your Lord? Do
you not then understand? |
|
|
|
Yusuf Ali:
|
Know they not that
God knoweth what they conceal and what they reveal? |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
Do they not know
that Allah knows what they conceal and what they disclose? |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
Do they not realize
that God knows anything they hide and anything they display? |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
Know they (Jews)
not that Allâh knows what they conceal and what they reveal? |
|
M. Pickthall:
|
Are they then unaware
that Allah knoweth that which they keep hidden and that which they
proclaim ? |
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
Do they not know
that Allah knows what they keep secret and what they make known? |
|
|
|
Yusuf Ali:
|
And there are among
them illiterates, who know not the Book, but (see therein their own)
desires, and they do nothing but conjecture. |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
And among them are
illiterates, who do not know the scripture but vain desires, and they
do nothing but conjecture. |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
Some of them are
illiterate and do not know the Book except to say "Amen" [to it].
They are merely guessing. |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
And there are among
them (Jews) unlettered people, who know not the Book, but they trust
upon false desires and they but guess. |
|
M. Pickthall:
|
Among them are unlettered
folk who know the Scripture not except from hearsay. They but guess.
|
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
And there arc among
them illiterates who know not the Book but only lies, and they do
but conjecture. |
|
|
|
Yusuf Ali:
|
Then woe to those
who write the Book with their own hands, and then say:"This is from
God," to traffic with it for miserable price!- Woe to them for what
their hands do write, and for the gain they make thereby. |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
So woe to those
who transcribe the scripture with their hands, then say: "This is
from the presence of Allah"- so that they may exchange it for a small
price. So woe to them for what their hands have written, and woe to
them for what they earn! |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
It will be too bad
for those who write the Book down in their own hand[writing], then
say: "This is from God!", so they may sell it for a paltry price.
It will be too bad for them because of what their hands have written.
Too bad for whatever the earn! |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
Then woe to those
who write the Book with their own hands and then say, "This is from
Allâh," to purchase with it a little price! Woe to them for what their
hands have written and woe to them for that they earn thereby. |
|
M. Pickthall:
|
Therefore woe be
unto those who write the Scripture with their hands and then say,
"This is from Allah," that they may purchase a small gain therewith.
Woe unto them for that their hands have written, and woe unto them
for that they earn thereby. |
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
Woe, then, to those
who write the book with their hands and then say: This is from Allah,
so that they may take for it a small price; therefore woe to them
for what their hands have written and woe to them for what they earn. |
|
|
|
Yusuf Ali:
|
And they say: "The
Fire shall not touch us but for a few numbered days:" Say: "Have ye
taken a promise from God, for He never breaks His promise? or is it
that ye say of God what ye do not know?" |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
And they say: "The
Fire will not touch us except for a number of days." Say: "Have you
taken a promise from Allah? If so, Allah will never break His promise;
or is it that you speak against Allah about which you do not know?"
|
|
T. J. Irving:
|
They say: "The Fire
will only touch us for several days." SAY: "Have you taken it on oath
from God? God never breaks Hi word. Or are you saying something about
God which you really do no know?" |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
And they (Jews)
say, "The Fire (i.e. Hell-fire on the Day of Resurrection) shall not
touch us but for a few numbered days." Say (O Muhammad Peace be upon
him to them): "Have you taken a covenant from Allâh, so that Allâh
will not break His Covenant? Or is it that you say of Allâh what you
know not?" |
|
M. Pickthall:
|
And they say: The
Fire (of punishment) will not touch us save for a certain number of
days. Say: Have ye received a covenant from Allah - truly Allah will
not break His covenant - or tell ye concerning Allah that which ye
know not ? |
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
And they say: Fire
shall not touch us but for a few days. Say: Have you received a promise
from Allah, then Allah will not fail to perform His promise, or do
you speak against Allah what you do not know? |
|
|
|
Yusuf Ali:
|
Nay, those who seek
gain in evil, and are girt round by their sins,- they are companions
of the Fire: Therein shall they abide (For ever). |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
Yea, whoever earns
evil and his wrong-doings encompass him, these then, are the fellows
of the Fire; in it they abide. |
|
T. J. Irving:
|
Rather anyone who
commits evil will find his mistake will he him in; those will become
inmates of the Fire; they will remain in it for ever. |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
Yes! Whosoever earns
evil and his sin has surrounded him, they are dwellers of the Fire
(i.e. Hell); they will dwell therein forever. |
|
M. Pickthall:
|
Nay, but whosoever
hath done evil and his sin surroundeth him; such are rightful owners
of the Fire; they will abide therein. |
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
Yea! whoever earns
evil and his sins beset him on every side, these are the inmates of
the fire; in it they shall abide. |
|
|
|
Yusuf Ali:
|
But those who have
faith and work righteousness, they are companions of the Garden: Therein
shall they abide (For ever). |
|
Zohurul Hoque:
|
But those who believe
and do good, these are the companions of the Garden; in it they abide.
|
|
T. J. Irving:
|
Those who believe
and perform honorable deeds will be inhabit ants of the Garden; they
will live in it for ever. |
|
T.U. Hilali-M. Khan:
|
And those who believe
(in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism) and do righteous good
deeds, they are dwellers of Paradise, they will dwell therein forever.
|
|
M. Pickthall:
|
And those who believe
and do good works: such are rightful owners of the Garden. They will
abide therein. |
|
M.H. Shakir:
|
And (as for) those
who believe and do good deeds, these are the dwellers of the garden;
in it they shall abide |
|
