| My
Rabb! permit me to give thanks for Your blessing which You have
bestowed on me and on my parents, and that I may do good which pleases
You, and admit me, with Your mercy, among Your righteous bondsmen.

Prophet
Sulaiman (pbh)
made this supplication when he heard words from a member of the
Naml. Compared to the weak and insignificant Naml,
Sulaiman (pbh) was very powerful and majestic. The fear of the
Namlites made Sulaiman (pbh) acknowledge the blessings of Allah
upon him. He would have been nothing had not his parents brought
him up with due care and education. Therefore, he offered thanks
to Allah for blessings on him as well as on his parents.
The Qur’an repeatedly commands people to do good. To do
good to others as well to oneself is a virtue that needs to be
inculcated. This supplication specifically seeks Allah’s
mercy so that a person can develop these skills and continue working
towards good that pleases Allah. Expression of gratitude is finest
when worded with humility. Prophet Sulaiman (pbh) although a powerful
king, set a fine example of humbleness in this supplication. In
return of Allah’s blessings, he asked permission even to
offer thanks. In addition, he offered good deeds as a testimony
of his gratitude. |
